Circulation Manual: 1.2 Hours and Access

During non-public hours (9a-1p), access to the collection, use of the Reading Room and access to the current library exhibit is limited to museum staff, docents, authorized volunteers, SAIC faculty, and SAIC Graduate Students.  During our public hours, listed below, anyone admitted to the museum is welcome to use the libraries (after signing in and checking their coat and other prohibited items).

Saturday-Sunday        Closed                Monday-Friday             1:00-5:00

Here are the main types of library users and a short summary of their particular set of library privileges:

Museum Staff

AIC staff members that work in any kind of scholarly capacity have full access to the library collection. After an hour-long orientation with a librarian, they will be given stack access as well as circulation and ILL privileges. Stack access includes access to all scanners and equipment in the stacks as well as the media room.

AIC interns, volunteers, and other temporary staff who are working in a curatorial or curatorial affairs department can have stack and Reading Room access after an orientation but are not allowed to check library materials out. They can only check out materials to their supervisor using the proxy function in ALMA [see section 2.1 “Checking in/Checking out items in ALMA”]

AIC staff members without an orientation are still allowed to use the Reading Room as a study space outside of public hours. They can use material from the Open and Display shelves and use public terminals.

SAIC

Full-time faculty members at SAIC who have undergone a library orientation have a set of library privileges indistinguishable from full-time museum research staff with one exception. While the circulation department will deliver materials within the museum [see section 12 “Deliveries”], SAIC staff must visit the Reading Room to pick up materials.

SAIC Graduate Students

SAIC graduate students who have completed a library orientation have extended access to the library. They have stack and Reading Room access from 10:30-5 each weekday. Special grad student prox cards with orange tags attached should be checked out in exchange for the student’s ARTIC ID card, which will be held until the student completes their visit. Graduate students (as well as part time and adjunct faculty) do not have circulating privileges but can hold research materials using the temporary reserve shelf. All SAIC students and faculty should swipe their ID card through the card reader whenever they visit the library.

This chart attempts to summarize the different privileges available to different staff and patrons as well as what method to use for counting or registering them.
